Tsinghua University and University of Milano-Bicocca Co-host the 3rd International Workshop on Matter, Energy, Safety and Health

The Third International Workshop on Matter, Energy, Safety and Health (MESH) was held from September 7 to 9 at the China-Italy Design Innovation Hub in Milan, Italy. Jointly organized by Tsinghua University and the University of Milano-Bicocca, the workshop brought together scholars from both institutions as well as Fudan University, the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Politecnico di Milano (Polimi) and Polytechnic University of Turin.

The opening session was chaired by Prof. Zhi ZENG (Tsinghua University). Opening remarks were delivered by representatives from both universities, including Prof. Zhi ZENG from Tsinghua University, Prof. Giuseppe Gorini and Prof. Claudia Riccardi from Milano-Bicocca. Speakers highlighted the collaboration between the two universities and the role of the MESH workshop as a vital platform for frontier research and international exchange.

Over two days, the workshop featured seven sessions covering four major themes: Matter and Detection, Safety and Health, Energy, and Astrophysics. 32 researchers have presented their work. Their presentations span materials science, energy science, safety science and medicine, covering perspectives ranging from fundamental particle physics, nuclear detection technologies, imaging techniques, and their applications in medicine, cultural heritage and energy, to astronomical observations. Topics include fundamental research such as neutrinos and neutrinoless double‑beta decay, dark‑matter searches and superconducting quantum technologies, as well as X‑ray CT and novel imaging technologies, tumour radiotherapy monitoring and radiological detection for archaeology.

Prof. Yigang YANG (Tsinghua University) delivered the closing remarks, summarizing the key outcomes of the workshop and expressing optimism for deeper collaboration in joint education, research, and personnel exchanges. This workshop was supported by Tsinghua University Milan Center.

The MESH workshop series, launched in 2025, has become an annual academic exchange between Tsinghua University and the University of Milano-Bicocca, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue across physics, engineering, and biomedical sciences.
