The 1st MESH International workshop
Abu Dhabi, UAE – January 12, 2025 – Tsinghua University and Khalifa University of Science and Technology (Khalifa University) successfully inaugurated the first International Academic workshop on Matter, Energy, Safety, and Health (MESH workshop) today in Abu Dhabi. The landmark event brought together over 60 scholars and experts from both institutions to explore frontier research and foster collaboration in these critical domains. The workshop was officially opened with addresses from key leaders. Professor Mahmoud Al-Qutayri, Associate Provost of Khalifa University, emphasized the vital role of higher education in strengthening UAE-China ties and expressed anticipation for expanded cooperation. Mr. Ahmed Al Mazrouei, Vice President of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), highlighted the deepening collaboration in nuclear energy and sought further joint efforts in renewable energy research and student training with Tsinghua. Professor Huang Wenhui, Chair of Tsinghua's Department of Engineering Physics, outlined advancements in nuclear science and expressed hopes for enhanced joint research and academic exchanges in new energy and medical health fields. President Li Luming of Tsinghua University delivered the closing remarks. He noted the workshop as a significant step in international academic exchange, aiming to contribute to global sustainable development through scientific innovation and to welcome more outstanding Emirati students to Tsinghua. Centered on the four pillars of "Matter, Energy, Safety, and Health," the workshop featured intensive academic exchanges across three parallel sessions: Clean Energy, Modern Physics, and Health & Safety. Faculty members from both universities, including Professor Gao Zhe, Professor Li Heping, and Professor Yahya Zweiri, presented their latest research findings, sparking in-depth discussions on potential collaboration in areas like clean energy, nuclear technology, aerospace, and medical engineering. The successful hosting of the MESH workshop marks a concrete step in implementing the Memorandum of Understanding between the two universities and lays a solid foundation for future collaborative research, talent cultivation, and industry-academia partnerships. About the Organizers: The workshop was jointly organized by the Department of Engineering Physics, Tsinghua University, and Khalifa University, with support from Tsinghua's Office of International Affairs.
