Message From The Department Director

The Department of Engineering Physics (DEP) was founded in 1956. Our mission is to provide advanced education in atomic energy science and technology for talented science and engineering students in China. With scientific developments and social progress, the scope for research, development and education in our department has extended to other related areas, including medical physics and engineering, particle physics and nuclear physics, astrophysics, plasma physics, safety science and engineering. Our vision is to put all these aspects into practice through both our education and research programs, to benefit our society and country and to pave the way, for our students, towards a more colorful scientific world and future.

Our department has made significant strides to achieve a perfect blend of high quality education, advanced research and social responsibility. Furthermore, our strong commitment for highquality education ensures that our outstanding graduates have topnotch talents which are essential for their success in the fast-paced modern society. To fulfill this goal, our education program has been designed in such way that students will establish a solid mathematics and physics foundation whilst acquiring much sought-after engineering skills as well. In addition, due to high energy demands resulting from the fast economic developments in China, our department encourages students to develop their career in the area of nuclear engineering and nuclear technology and to become professionals in the energy sector after graduation. Our curriculum includes both fundamental courses in mathematics and physics and other relevant subjects containing many "DIY" experiments. By this way, our undergraduate students can gain significant knowledge and essential skills during their four-year program.

We have established a number of scientific research facilities and platforms, such as China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL), China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX), Sino-UNIted Spherical Tokamak (SUNIST), Isotope Separation, Tsinghua Thomson-scattering X-ray source (TTX), Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS), etc. Our faculty members have participated in international collaborations on fundamental research, including the Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) Experiment, Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment, Super-Kamiokande Experiment, and STAR Experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC).

The research activities in our department cover a broad range of topics, which not only include frontier science and cuttingedge technologies, but also the key development projects associated with specific national requirements. In particular, our faculty members have play key roles in the affiliated Nuctech Company Limited (NUCTECH) and the Beijing Global Safety Technology Co. Ltd (Global Safety). Our research team in NUCTECH has developed the world leading security inspection systems and cargo inspection systems, which have been exported to over 150 countries and regions in the world. We also help the Global Safety Company to develop core technologies and products for their emergency response platform systems and equipment, which have been widely accepted by both domestic and overseas markets. In addition, the department is cooperating with other companies to develop new medical technologies and products for dental CT, SPECT, PET as well.

I  believe that, we shall continue in our efforts to improve on education, research and service to society with a global impact. With the strong support from our faculty, students, industrial partners and friends all over the world, I am confident that we will attain even greater achievements in the future.
