Tsinghua University Department of Engineering Physics Hosts Appointment Ceremony for Dr. Joe Xing as Visiting Professor


On September 16, 2025, the Department of Engineering Physics (DEP) at Tsinghua University held a ceremony in Liuqing Building to appoint Dr. Joe Xing as a Visiting Professor, followed by an academic forum. Department Chair Prof. Wenhui Huang, Associate Chair Prof. Liang Li, and other faculty and students attended the event.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Huang highlighted that Dr. Xing is the first overseas visiting professor appointed by DEP since the pandemic, marking a milestone in strengthening international academic exchange and interdisciplinary innovation. A certificate of appointment was presented to Dr. Xing during the ceremony.



Academic Forum: Agentic AI and Medical Imaging


After the ceremony, Dr. Xing delivered a lecture titled “From Large Language Models to Agentic AI: Transforming Medical Imaging and Healthcare.” He introduced the concept of Agentic AI, emphasizing its applications in task planning, multi-agent collaboration, and medical imaging diagnostics. He also presented his team’s recent achievements, including echocardiography analysis and electronic medical record interpretation, showcasing the transformative potential of AI in healthcare. The forum sparked lively discussions among faculty and students about the intersections of AI, high-energy physics, and medical technology.

The successful event represents a significant step for DEP in advancing interdisciplinary research and international collaboration. Moving forward, the department will continue to foster global partnerships, supporting Tsinghua’s initiative and contributing to national and societal development.


About Dr. Joe Xing

Dr. Xing earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2008 and his Ph.D. from Syracuse University, focusing on LHCb experiments at CERN. He has worked as a Scientist at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and is now co-founder and CTO of C.LIGHT Technologies in Silicon Valley, which developed the world’s first FDA-approved clinical retinal micro-movement tracker (Retitrack™). He also serves as an industry mentor in the Data Science Department at UC Berkeley. During his appointment at Tsinghua, Dr. Xing will collaborate on developing a new LHCb electromagnetic calorimeter and offer a course on frontier AI applications, promoting integration between artificial intelligence and high-energy physics.
