Research Field

Professor Li Yuanjing has dedicated years to advancing nuclear technology applications in both R&D and industrialization. As the President of Tsinghua University Joint Research Center for Special Material Particle Applications, he leads research teams to address critical national strategic demand of security through continuous innovation. He and his team have successfully developed the high-energy and dual-energy container inspection system with material identification, the fast scan system for container inspection, the train inspection system, the World’s first X-ray liquid security inspection system, CT baggage inspection system, Millimeter-Wave Human Body Scanner, etc. All these achievements have not only significantly enhanced public safety, but also generated substantial economic value.

In respect of radiation physics and detection, Professor Li led the National 973 Program project "R&D and Mass Production of MRPC Detectors". The time-of-flight detectors developed and produced played a pivotal role in the STAR experiment finding of the heaviest antimatter—anti-alpha particles (published in Nature). Since 2001, he has started research on dark matter search, presided over the key international cooperation project of the National Natural Science Foundation of china “China-Korea Cooperation in Dark Matter Research”, and served as the general coordinator of the China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX) Project. The CDEX obtained the world's most sensitive dark matter detection results in 2014, which was selected as one of the top ten domestic science and technology news in 2014. In addition, as a member of the management committee and deputy director of the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) — the world's deepest underground lab, he contributed to its planning, construction, and strategic development. He currently serves as Vice President and Chief Engineer of the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" National major scientific and technological infrastructure Project: "Ultra-deep Underground and Extremely Low Radiation Background Facility for Frontier Physics Experiments at CJPL". Up to now, Professor Li has published over 100 scientific papers and more than 200 invention patents.
